Thanks this has been a big help. 
one more quesion just so I have this clear in my head.  You said above "i have 
all the updates needed online" does that mean: 

1. I can download all the pre compiles "Ardour relate" packages you have, and 
use them with my system now? or

2. I have to update my system to use the packages no matter what.

I realize I have a 3 option also, I can also try recompling them myself, with 
some luck.
