Most, but not all, of the processors have balanced i/o.  My reverb/fx
box and mixer do.  My compressor, sadly, does not.  It's at the top of 
the list for replacement.  The reverb/fx box also has SPDIF,
but the mic modelers (which I am absurdly fond of) uses AES/EBU.  The
modelers are also wierd because they have 1/4" balanced in, unbalanced 
out, though there's a balanced XLR connector :-/

It's a hodgepodge.  Fortunately, About 75% of the time, I just use the
reverb/fx box.  I haven't taken much advantage of its SPDIF port, though,
because I can't bring myself to cough up the big bux for a cable that
for all the world looks just like an ordinary RCA audio cable!

I find that my fx loop is pretty quiet even if I bring the modelers
and compressor into it.  Overall, I'm happy, given the constraints of my
budget.
