Doh! You're so right. It Just Works.

The complaint that comes up (which scared me off from just trying it
until now) with apt-get:

 dpkg: libardour0: dependency problems, but removing anyway as you
request:
 ardour-gtk depends on libardour0 (>= 0.9beta28).

can be safely ignored.

0.9beta29 is running fine for me now hurrah.
