It might also be worth enabling Magic SysRq key in the kernel. Then when
something crashes you go

Alt-SysRq-S
Alt-SysRq-U
Alt-SysRq-B

Meaning sync filesystems, unmount, and reboot.

FWIW, I've never had Reiser lose data. <searches for wood to touch>
