Erm, the default in qjackctl is 128, and this is about *jackd's* -p 
option (*not* the alsa backend -p option). It increases the amount of 
memory jackd allocates for ports. Looks like

/usr/local/bin/jackstart -R -p512 -dalsa -dhw:0 -r48000 -p1024 -n2
                            ^^^^^
