My usual rule of thumb is: 

  (1) If I think I may not understand the interface, ask on
  ardour-users.

  (2) If I think it's probably a bug, first check Mantis for dups then
  report it on ardour-devel (and Mantis)

In either case, it's just my best guess.  Mistakes are pemitted.  ;-)
