I've recorded 8 tracks at once without any problems using a 4200 RPM notebook 
IDE hard drive.  Rest of the system was a 2.8 GHz P4, RME Hammerfall DSP w/ 
Mutliface.

My biggest hint is to make sure ACPI is turned off at boot time by using 
"acpi=off" on your kernel command line.
