Hi Tim, that turned out to be true - 'gtk2_ardour/ui_config.h"has a very 
similar concept called UI_CONFIG_VARIABLE

I've pushed a new branch called 'string-convert-msvc-2' (you can ignore 
the old one from yesterday).  Your string_convert stuff is now buildable 
with MSVC with only minor modifications.  Best regards and thanks for
