That is exactly why I prefer the 'two points' method.
The only purpose of having the two points separated is
to be able to grab either without confusion. So the
distance could be fixed to e.g. two times the size of
the point on-screen.

OTOH, iff new points would be created *on the current line*
and then optionally moved (by drag instead of click), that
would allow all common operations:

single point:
   click and drag.

step/fade:
   click the first,
   click and drag the second.

region:
   two times step/fade,
   or mixbus mode.
