Perhaps a better idea would be to charge for some *optional extra* that was
associated with Ardour, rather than for Ardour itself.  For example, if a
good quality tutorial / user manual was available and it was somehow locked
or encrypted.  Making a contribution towards Ardour would get you a code
that would unlock the tutorial and user manual.

In fact, Ardour's 'Help' forums could display something to advertise the
tutorial - and those (regulars) who provide help on the forums could
periodically nag new users to buy it (a bit like people get nagged to read
the FAQ's).

Is this possible? / worth considering?
