[ardour-dev] reopening+patch for mantis bug 0001084

I found that this rather old issue still existed in newest ardour2.

So I found a solution for it, and I would appreciate if someone could  
review
or test the patch, as it is not extensively tested, and I don't know if the
patch breaks anything. More details+patch can be found on the bug report
