Hmm.. The tests i ran to get more exact numbers went wrong for gcc
4.0.3. There are no percision problems with gcc4. Sorry for the
confusion. Here are the correct numbers

gcc    | peak computation | mixing algos
------------------------------------------------
4.0.3  | 4 - 10x faster   | 2 - 4x faster

But the optimizer for gcc 3.4 is still a bit more mature than for 4.0.3.
