Thanks for the reply Mark. I dunno what happened there... it looks like the 
files were missing/corrupt but in fact they are where they say they are and i 
can replace thm on the toimeline and it's fine. but when i re-open one of 
them went missing again. too busy to look deeply into it at the momemt, but i 
did find one thing... my root partiton was full ! my audio disk had plenty 
and of course i have a swap partition but it's the only anomoly 
(spelling? :) ) i can find.
