Nope, during the FFWD, the GTK interface freezes hard.  The cause of
my issue is that my disk IO isn't keeping up with the playback.  The
cause of the interface freeze is that Ardour's haveing a problem with
the interface dialog.

The session that was freezing in the FFWD is a pretty big one, with a 
dozen or so tracks playing back.  It's OK at normal speeds, but clearly
my system falls over trying to read all those tracks so quickly.

I've never used the FFWD function before, since I can always position the
playhead where I want.  I only found this out because I've been mucking
around with the transport stuff on my control surface, and one button's
mapped to MMC FWD.

This isn't a control that's available in Ardour's editor window, and I
question its usefulness - I just have to figure out what I want to replace
it with.  It doesn't look like there's a "Record" MMC parameter.
