Did you do ldconfig after installing the libs from source, are they  
installed in /usr/local(/lib/?
That is the default for compiled packages
If so, is that in you /etc/ld.so.conf?
If not, add /usr/local/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf
It should work, but your linker isn't able to find the libraries.
